The Scottish government has published its NHS workforce plan for 2008-09, which includes the training numbers for doctors and nurses.
A further £10m will be spent on an extra 150 GP training posts. Nursing and midwifery students will get £5m a year to support their training. This funding will come from a reduction in nursing and midwifery student numbers in the first year of training in 2008-09.
Cabinet secretary for health and well-being Nicola Sturgeon said: 'It is the first time at national level that a workforce plan has been linked to a service delivery plan for the future of the NHS and I firmly believe this is a vital development to ensure we have an NHS and a workforce that is fit for the future.'
