A Healthcare Commission survey has highlighted wide variations in patients' experience of primary care between different PCTs.

Striking variations were found in 48-hour access and patient choice, both of which have been prioritised by the Department of Health.

The proportion of patients reporting waiting more than 48 hours for an appointment varied from 2 per cent in Darlington to 44 per cent in Tower Hamlets.

The proportion of patients offered a choice of hospital for their first appointment varied from 63 per cent in Nottingham City to 22 per cent in the Isle of Wight.

The Healthcare commission should be aware that GPs appointments are becoming lessavailable for 2 reasons.
1. The increased number of appointments for dental reasons
2. The increased numbers of patients who do not turn up for appointments
