The NHS has reported a £500m surplus for 2006-07, according to figures published today by the Department of Health.
The figures also show that the proportion of NHS organisations in deficit has fallen from 33 per cent in 2005-06 to 22 per cent in 2006-07. Health secretary Patricia Hewitt said: 'I want to thank NHS staff, who have worked incredibly hard to turn the NHS around while minimising the impact on patients and cutting waiting lists to their lowest level ever.'
