Commissioning 2010

Controlling costs, investing wisely, making savings where possible and delivering high quality, fit-for-purpose care for all. The NHS had already predicted an extended ‘lean’ period following years of financial growth. Now would have been the time to balance the books. Yet the coordinated impact of financial recession, with this already present need to tighten the purse strings, could not have been anticipated. These two events have culminated in an urgent pressure to control costs, invest wisely and make savings where possible. This must all occur in the context of delivering high quality, fit-for-purpose care for all. Health Service Journal recognises the crucial role commissioners play in developing a sustainable, world class NHS and supporting the health service through the financially challenging times ahead. Commissioners must develop their expert practice, to not only be outstanding ‘World Class Commissioners’, but to ensure you really capitalise on potential savings and efficiencies.
