Welcome to the latest issue of Intelligence, the quarterly HSJ supplement dedicated to innovation, information and technology.
In this issue we look at how patients are being empowered to manage their own conditions through telehealth. Pilot schemes estimate multi-million pound savings from reductions in emergency admissions and bed use.
As Frank Burns points out, the NHS will eventually have to complete the same technological transformation as all other industries and there is a desperate need for real enthusiasm among grass-roots clinicians and managers.
As he says: 'What fires up the passion of clinicians for is clinical applications for new technology which directly impact treating sick people and helping them recover as much quality of life as clinically possible.'
Elsewhere, we see how the 18-week target is going to be measured, with pioneer sites looking at how existing systems can generate referral-to-treatment data.
