MPs hold on in Whittington row seats
A high profile row over hospital reconfiguration in north London has not seen any MPs lose their seats.
Incumbents and sitting MPs in areas served by the Whittington Hospital had campaigned against the potential downgrading of its accident and emergency and maternity services.
No proposals have been published but commissioners in the area are developing plans to hugely reduce hospital capacity.
Last week health secretary Andy Burnham told the Camden New Journal local paper he would “order a complete halt in the process that is being run” and he was “asking NHS London to go back to the drawing board”.
The nearby Islington South and Thornberry constituency, a top Liberal Democrat target, was held by incumbent Labour MP Emily Thornberry.
But nearby Hornsey and Wood Green, which Labour had hoped to win with candidate Karen Jennings, Unison’s head of health, was held by the Lib Dems.
Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn held the safe seat of Islington North, where Whittington Hospital is sited.
