Comment on: An introduction to clinical coding
Accurate coding is not just a financial benefit for Acute Trusts. It also helps improve planing and commissioning of patient care as it provides a more accurate factual basis for care pathway discussions across the health economy. Acute Trusts and GP Practices should be encouraged through contractual penalties to improve the quality and accuracy of their patient data so commissioners can have greater understanding of the demands and needs of their patient poluation. A structured invoice validation process that includes GPs is an essential route to achieving this. Under current tariff rules shifts in coding improvement impact the cost of Acute treatment further down the line so CCGs themselves need to become more proficient in assessing the potential for improvement within their own providers and be able to quantify the likely uplift in charges that will result so they can proactively plan for managing this.
