  • Comment on: Binge drinking strategies should recognise regional variations

    Mike Swift's comment 22-Oct-2009 3:40 pm

Anonymous is right - understand what the groups' current views and motivators are and work on those. Moreover there's much evidence to prove that people don't tell the truth when surveyed about delicate and possibly embarassing subjects such as this. They tell the surveyor what they think the surveyor wants to or should know. (Nobody outside Wales has said apparently that they drink because they like it and or the effect it has on them.) So, its worth investing in some ethnographic undercover work to find out what levers to use.

  • Comment on: Andrew Lansley pledges to slash NHS bureaucracy

Well what did you expect him to say? He's rousing the faithful - that's his job this week. Its no different to umpteen other party conference performances over the last 30 years. Look on the bright side, if he's going to take on the DH & the SHAs first, that surely leaves the rest of us in peace for a long long time. PS John Adsett is right. If you can justify what you write, why be annonymous? If you can't, should you write it?

  • Comment on: Recession means PCTs must make 'hard choices' on spending

    Mike Swift's comment 5-Oct-2009 3:23 pm

Give the guy a break, he was talking to politicians who will still be deluding themselves that we can save all we need to save by running amok through public sector back offices all across the country without damaging frontline services.

  • Comment on: NHS managers’ career progress barred by prejudices, confidential study finds

    Mike Swift's comment 5-Oct-2009 12:30 pm

I agree with Mary. We need some concrete examples of descrimination to promote a constructive, evidence-based way forward that encourages team work across all ethnic groups and ameliorates alienation.

  • Comment on: More Perspiration than Inspiration

    Mike Swift's comment 2-Oct-2009 1:02 pm

Neil Your conclusion that; "we have placed too much emphasis on leadership and insufficient on developing good quality management and administration" is a welcome breath of fresh air. When I joined the service in 1970 you didn't get far up the ladder without an IHM qualification or its equivalent. Alas no longer. We'll certainly notice the lack when unpleasant descisions have to be made after the general election. Now that most clinicians can progress clinically to being consultants, there's not much wrong with the model whereby with the appropriate training, qualifications & experience, doctors doctor, nurses nurse & managers manage. (Lordy I sound like a whingeing neaderthal {no offence to any neaderthals, or whingers, who may be reading this} but its an option well worth revisiting.
