Health minister Lord Darzi's report introduces some new acronyms and jargon. Here's a brief guide
Best practice tariff
A new tariff under payment by results that covers best practice, not average costs.
CQUIN
Presumably pronounced "sequin", a new commissioning for quality and innovation scheme. It is a "simple overlay to PbR, forming part of commissioning contracts".
Clinical dashboards
Using national and locally developed measures to give patients an at-a-glance measure of quality.
ICO
Integrated care organisations: clinically led organisations that bring together health and social care staff.
NQB
National Quality Board, which will provide "strategic oversight and leadership on quality". The NQB will oversee work on quality metrics and advise the health secretary on the priorities for clinical standards set by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. Its first annual report is to be published by June 2009.
National challenge
There will be no new national targets beyond the minimum set now. Instead, we have new national challenges.
