Queen's Speech reignites row over mental health legislation
The government used yesterday's Queen's Speech to confirm that it will introduce a bill to reform mental health legislation, following its decision to abandon plans for a new mental health act in March.
The bill will introduce a new definition of 'mental disorder', a new 'appropriate treatment test' and supervised community treatment for patients discharged from compulsory treatment in hospitals, to 'prevent them from relapsing, thereby improving patient and public safety'.
The move has already been condemned by opposition MPs, doctors' leaders and mental health campaigners still hoping for patient-focused reforms.
The Queen's Speech also indicated that the government will bring forward proposals to create a UK-wide regulator for IVF, embryology and human tissues and transplantation, and press on with 'modernisation' of the NHS.
