Having recently resigned from a senior position in the PPP / PFI healthcare sector I have recently applied for posts in the NHS. I worked at a senior level in the NHS in the '90's and have subsequently held very senior positions in private healthcare and business (Managing Director, Director and Chief Operations Officer). Staffs have varied from 50+ to 1500+, budgets from £10m to in excess of £200m.
The majority of responses have been along the lines of "great CV but we need someone with more recent NHS experience".
QUESTIONS:
1. Does an 100% NHS career represent the best route to a CEO role in the NHS?
2. Is the NHS best served by not bringing in outsiders with wider and more varied experiences?
3. If you are responsible for recruiting do you pick the "wild card" that will challenge orthodox thinking - or the "safe pair of hands" that will bring existing NHS cultural mores to the NHS?
PS: I have now found a new role - in the private sector!
