The swine flu hit NZ in our autumn and was/is present during the usual seasonal flu period. In Canterbury NZ we implemented a green stream approach using Community Based Assessment Centres (CBACs) and dedicated freephone flu lines to keep General Practice as functional as possible. This approach definitely worked and the swine flu is now in sharp decline. So much so that the last of the CBACs closed this week and the swine flu is now handled as a seasonal flu. It appears around 40% of the population were affected. It can be managed and controlled with education, common sense and segregation/self management.
