I passionately oppose Mr Britnell's proposal, however I agree that the funding model MUST BE DISCUSSED.

This is what the government is refusing to do. Ministers repeat "free at the point of use" as a meaningless mantra whilst advancing ideas, e.g. personal choice and the unqualified pursuit of quality, which ensure that it is unsustainable.

(Simon Burns referring to PCTs as having the responsibility of stopping GPs charging for access to NHS services, whilst describing them as "unnecessary", is a good example - see http://tiny.cc/SimonSays55).

Important matters like choice and quality need to managed very carefully (perhaps expensively) in a tax-funded system.

If we do not want to pay that price we must honestly dismiss "free at the point of use" as too expensive. It is wickedly dishonest to pretend that the principles of the NHS are compatible with the current proposals for future health service provision in England.

This is far too big an issue to be addressed by tweaking a largely complete piece of government legislation. The simple clause that needs to be added is for a referendum on the implicit decision for England to opt-out of the NHS, once the Bill has been passed, but before it can be implemented.

I am sure that Mr Britnell will be ready to brief Mr Cameron. It will be interesting to see which side Mr Clegg takes on this referendum!
