Successful mavericks in any industry are the exception and not the rule. The NHS has a history of initiatives that have fallen by the wayside once their champion has moved on, for example Mark Britnell's World Class Commissioning and Lord Darzi's GP Led Health Centres. Leadership is about inspiring others to follow and to continue to follow. To successfully embed a new way of working within a local healthcare community requires more than entrepreneurial zeal even if basic business skills are regarded by some as 'basic common sense'.
