The National Cancer Action Team is sponsoring a national workforce project that seeks to define indicative rehabilitation workforce levels needed to support patients with cancer and cancer-related palliative care needs. This will be mostly but entirely in relation to physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and dietetics.
The first stage of the project is to review the evidence available for rehabilitation interventions and pathways of care, followed by the production of a written report about the evidence available for each of 8 tumour sites.
This information will be used subsequently as a framework on which to develop national evidence-based pathways of care and finally indicative workforce figures for Allied Health Professionals. The work is to be completed at the latest by late autumn 2008.
