WORKFORCE: Nearly 100 staff have been placed ‘at risk’ at Bedford Hospital as the trust considers major changes to its wards.
Some wards would be merged and others change location, under the plan which would preserve all existing services but aim to reduce length of stay.
Director of nursing and patient services, Eiri Jones, said: “These proposed changes are grounded in improving the way we work across the health economy, which means we need fewer beds for the same number of patients, as they will be spending less time in hospital unnecessarily.”
The trust says it wants to minimise redundancies and is not filling some vacancies and working with community service providers around redeployment of staff. The staff at risk work in four wards whose function could change.
A formal consultation on the proposed changes started this week.
