SERVICE DESIGN: NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group has launched a consultation on the design of community diabetes services.

The CCG’s new initiative will work collaboratively with healthcare professionals and patients across West Lancashire in order to review the current service and highlight where it can be strengthened. As part of the initiative, a new local diabetes patient network has been established to allow individuals who understand diabetes to contribute their views to plans for the future.

Dr Bapi Biswas, one of the GPexecutive leads at NHS West Lancashire CCG said: “As well as disrupting patients’ health and lifestyle, diabetes can reduce life expectancy by 10–20 years making it an incredibly serious disease. This new initiative is a major step forward for diabetes in our local area, but we would like insight from local individuals in moving this forward.”

“The current service is somewhat fragmented and there is an evident need for improvement. By working collaboratively with other healthcare, diabetes experts and individuals with first-hand experience of type 2 diabetes, we aim to shape the future of diabetes for the people of west Lancashire,” he added.
