STRUCTURE: The provider arm of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly plans to become a social enterprise by October.

Board papers said an integrated business plan had been drawn up by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Community Health Services to establish a social enterprise in the form of a community interest company (CIC).

The papers state: “The proposition is to form a new legal entity for the provision of a comprehensive range of adult community health services to the population of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

“The timescale for delivery is to establish the organisation and chair/chief executive Designate appointments by 1 April 2011, with the new organisation becoming operational on 1 October 2011.”

The primary care trust’s board was told a comprehensive due diligence exercise was underway.

The papers add: “It is also acknowledged that the CIC will require exceptional leadership and substantial commercial experience and skills for the CIC to thrive.

“We are, therefore, exploring arrangements to secure commercial and social enterprise experience to support the new organisation.”
