From the failures identified by the Francis report to the fallout from the Jimmy Savile scandal at the BBC, Britain’s institutions are in the grip of perpetual crisis.
From Hillsborough to the Leveson and LIBOR inquiries, high profile standoffs between Conservative ministers and the civil service and police seem to indicate considerable internal disarray.
Why have Britain’s institutions, once famed for their strength and resilience, now become so vulnerable to criticism? Can anything be done to restore or rebuild trust, or do we require entirely new institutions fit for the challenges of the 21st century? Filmed at the Battle of Ideas festival, the panel in this debate, including HSJ editor Alastair McLellan, have plenty to get stuck in to.
The other people in the debate are Jessica Crowe, executive director at the Centre for Public Scrutiny; barrister Jon Holbrook; and Ben Lucas, chair of public services at the Royal Society of the Arts. The “battle” was chaired by Robin Walsh, a graduate medical student and writer on medical issues.
