FINANCE: Free parking for disabled people has been scrapped at a Midlands hospital with parking charges for short-stay visitors being doubled.

The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals Trust has announced the plans to help it raise £1.5 million a year.

Drivers will have to pay £2 to park between 15 minutes and an hour at the trust’s New Cross Hospital, double the previous amount and the first time disable drivers have had to pay.

Earlier this year the trust increased prices for those staying longer than an hour by 50 per cent.

Staff will also have to pay to park at the hospital - an annual amount up to £252 a year. Staff used to be able to park for free.

The Royal Wolverhampton Trust has to save £15m by March.
