PERFORMANCE: There were no cases of hospital-acquired MRSA at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust during 2011.
The trust, which runs Worthing, Southlands and St Richard’s hospitals, described it as a “remarkable achievement” and praised staff for their infection control efforts.
In 2010 there were seven cases of hospital-acquired MRSA at the trust and 11 the previous year.
The trust said it had prioritised infection control in recent years. Key improvements included cleaning teams visiting each ward at least twice a day, replacing the old arrangement where a single cleaner was allocated to a ward, and investment in all levels of nursing over the last five years.
