Health secretary Andy Burnham has said he is “not ruling out” a public inquiry into the Mid Staffordshire foundation trust scandal.

He told the Birmingham Post he was “looking at the information… we’ll in due course say something more about the way forward”.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said it had “never categorically ruled out” an inquiry. The health committee last week supported the Royal College of Nursing’s call for an inquiry with evidence given in private.
