WORKFORCE: King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust’s spending on agency nursing staff has increased by 71 per cent since the same last point last year.

According to the trust’s October board papers agency spending is now at £2million a month.

The trust has explained this increase because they are seeking to employ more nurses. The trust has so far been unable to fill nursing vacancies and agency staff have been brought in to fill the gap.

The papers state: “Agency spend has steaily been increasing since last year and is particularly high in specialised areas where recruitment into vacancies is difficult. Some overseas recruitment is taking place but this is a slow and expensive process.”
