PERFORMANCE: Barts Health Trust is a “national outlier” in MRSA infections, a report to the trust’s board said.
Chief executive Peter Morris’s report said: “We have already exceeded our annual threshold for MRSA - with nine bacteraemias in the year to date against a full-year threshold of eight cases. This makes us a national outlier.
“Six of the cases have been at The Royal London Hospital and this is where a particular focus is being placed on addressing policy and practice.”
He added: “Since our last board meeting the medical director has reviewed the trust’s action plan with colleagues and will drive forward its delivery against clear milestones, with a focus on IV access, antibiotic stewardship, screening, training and awareness and, importantly, challenging non-compliance.”
HSJ understands the Department of Health will make HCAIs a more serious “zero tolerance” reporting measure in the 2013-14 operating framework.
