PERFORMANCE: A new IT system being installed at Barts Health Trust in October will make it impossible to continue treatment of a patient without a venous thromboembolism assessment.

A report to the board of the east London acute trust said: “As we enter quarter three the former Barts and The London sites will see a major computer upgrade. This will contribute to solving some performance issues. It for example allows us to follow Newham’s lead on VTE by making it impossible to proceed care without an assessment.

“More centrally, it will assist with the data quality of our 18 week results by creating a pathway ID for every patient contact. This should, in time, reduce the use of back office resource to alter front-end data entry.”

It added: “Board members, staff and the public are well aware from 2008 of the potential effects of major computer changes and the utmost care is being taken to ensure that both the technical and personnel facets of the changes are well executed.”
