STRUCTURE: An internal review is to be carried out into the cardiothoracic centre at Basildon Hospital, looking at whether it has achieved its original aims and how it might develop in the future.
The centre was set up in 2007 with explicit targets around treating 75 per cent of Essex cardiology and cardiac surgery patients who would otherwise travel into London. It has a heart attack service and depends on the input of interventional cardiologists from other Essex trusts.
The review will look at the centre’s financial performance and what the opportunities are to enhance financial returns on activity, as well as workforce and patient quality and safety. Its outcome is expected to be examined at the June board meeting of Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals Foundation Trust.
