PERFORMANCE: Cheshire and Wirral Partnership Foundation Trust can learn important lessons from the inquiry into failings at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust, a director has said.

These include the need to clarify managers’ roles and to consider the mental health needs of women and babies, Cheshire and Wirral medical director Anushta Sivanathan said.

The Morecambe Bay inquiry, chaired by Bill Kirkup, said last month that the maternity care at Furness General Hospital was dysfunctional and led to unnecessary deaths of mothers and babies.

Dr Sivanathan said: “The themes form the investigation will be discussed with commissioners as part of ongoing contract development and negotiations to promote a focus on safe and effective care that delivers good patient experience.”
