STRUCTURE: The foundation trust is investing £1.4m in merging its two specialist stroke facilities into one unit.

The trust said the scheme will benefit around 450 patients every year, and will incorporate all stroke services into one purpose-built facility – merging its acute ward with a brand new rehabilitation unit.

As a result, from 13 April 2011, all of the foundation’s stroke patients will be treated solely at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital instead of being transferred to Walton Hospital for rehabilitation services. The Walton’s stroke team will be relocated to the Royal.

The investment will also increase the level of rehabilitation treatment on offer, with “the comprehensive recovery package” increasing from an average of five to seven days.

Chief executive Eric Morton said: “We have invested £1.4m to create a progressive facility that will make a real difference to this vital local service – and I am convinced it is the right answer.”
