A new initiative by public health minister Gillian Merron aims to encourage families to walk their kids to school at least once a week as a way of becoming more active.

It is a pity the launch was due the week beginning 5 January, as most of the country was covered in snow, hundreds of schools were shut and a national grit shortage rendered pavements perilously icy to walk across. In an equally disappointing blow to public services, the launch was cancelled.
