January is always a gloomy month and the Department of Health seems determined to keep it that way.

Whereas babies born on New Year’s Day are often celebrated in local newspapers, public health minister Gillian Merron issued a press release headed: “Three hundred New Year’s Day babies could grow up to be obese.”

Then care services minister Phil Hope recommended people make a new year’s resolution to help the 1 million older people “trapped in their own homes”.

To top it off, the DH launched NHS Stressline to “tackle new year money blues”.

Happy new year, everyone.
