PERFORMANCE: Dartford and Gravesham Trust plans to bring in low rise beds and visual aids for older people to prevent people sustaining injuries through falls.

The trust recorded 111 falls in December, 35 of which were unwitnessed. Two falls resulted in a fracture.

Director of nursing and quality Vikki Carruth told the trust board: “Falls remain an ongoing concern. Considerable work is ongoing with all areas now using the Productive Ward safety crosses, providing additional information on any/every fall and any patient who falls more than once has a root cause analysis which will be reviewed by the falls group.

“There are also daily reports from the risk team to the director of nursing which highlight any patient who has had a second fall. Additional equipment (low rise beds etc), new visual clues/alerts and review of the post falls protocol amongst other pieces of work are being progressed.”
