David Nicholson needs to ensure that Cinderella services have ring-fenced funding when he devolves 90 per cent of the NHS funds to local budgets.
Local patients will demonstrate when an A&E department is threatened with closure and they will campaign for another cot in the paediatric unit, but no one complains if they cannot get an appointment within 48 hours at a GUM clinic.
The Government's pledge to improve access to GUM clinics hasn't a hope of succeeding when PCTs are diverting over 60 per cent of the extra money intended for sexual health to meet other priorities.
We hope that Mr Nicholson has learnt that at local level in this case, no choice is better that free choice!
