WORKFORCE: Ron Calvert has been appointed chief executive of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Calvert, who is currently chief executive of Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust, will take up the appointment on 1 September.

He succeeds substantive chief executive Nigel Clifton, who passed away in August 2010, and interim chief executive Peter Reading.

Mr Calvert has held a number of senior management and executive posts in hospitals across England, beginning his NHS management career in Hull.

In his current post at Trafford, which he took up in January 2009, he was responsible for turning round a challenged trust and developing proposals for a new integrated care organisation. Under his leadership, Trafford won the Dr Foster “Medium Sized Hospital of the Year” award in 2009.

He holds an MBA from Newcastle University and a BSc in Zoology from Newcastle, and is a former semi-professional squash player.

Commenting on his latest appointment, Mr Calvert said: “These are challenging times across the NHS, but I am confident that I will be well supported by the workforce at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals so that we can build upon the good work which has already been established at the trust.”
