FINANCE: Dorset County Hospital Foundation Trust was behind plan on its surplus by more than £400,000 at the end of May, latest board papers reveal.

The report to July’s board said the trust had a deficit of £23,000 against a planned surplus of £423,000.

It continued: “The poor financial performance relates to a continued usage of high cost temporary staff to cover both vacancies and an increased dependency on the wards.

“The underperformance on the delivery of the cost improvement programme is also contributing towards the current financial pressures and remains the largest financial risk to the trust.”

The trust has to deliver £6m of efficiency savings this financial year.
