I was interested to read the letter from Ken Hutchinson, managing director of HR Strategic Solutions, which characterised the electronic staff record as a failed Department of Health initiative (Feedback, page 19, 28 September).

ESR is the new human resources and payroll system for the NHS and is already live in 217 NHS trusts, paying and holding comprehensive employment records for over 400,000 NHS staff.

We migrate around 100,000 employees or 50 NHS trusts on to the system every two months. We have met every implementation deadline since early 2005 and we are on schedule to roll out to the entire NHS by April 2008, when we will pay and hold employment records for all 1.2 million NHS employees.

ESR is a significant success story that the joint NHS and McKesson team have every reason to be proud of. It provides a comprehensive, world-class HR and payroll solution that enables efficiency savings for the tax payer through single data entry and much improved HR information to better plan for, manage and develop the largest workforce in Europe.
