The NHS Counter Fraud Authority is investigating large payments made by a trust to a bankrupt company.

London North West Healthcare Trust has confirmed the NHS CFA is looking at whether fraud had been involved in a “large overpayment” to a contractor doing electrical work at its Northwick Park Hospital site.

This contractor went into liquidation leaving some of the work uncompleted.

The trust would not confirm how much the overpayment had been or who the contractor was, but HSJ understands the loss to the trust was £411,000.

The £711m-turnover acute and community care trust ended the 2017-18 financial year with a deficit of £39m.

It has commissiond its own investigation from firm TIAA, and stressed that this would be carried out by a separate part of TIAA to the bit of the company that had carried out internal audit work for LNWH and given it a “substantial assurance” opinion.

The investigation is due to conclude by the end of June.
