The government must introduce incentives and financial mechanisms to support integration in the NHS, according to a think tank report.

The Nuffield Trust report Removing the Policy Barriers to Integrated Care in England says more attention has been given to developing competition than collaboration. This balance must be redressed if better coordinated services across health and social care are to become a reality.

Nuffield head of policy Judith Smith said: “Encouraging integration between providers is the most rational way forward to reduce fragmented care, the avoidable ill health it produces, and to improve efficiency.”
