• London and East of England will see most of the initial capital investment
  • Seven building projects in South West to deliver six acute and up to 12 community hospitals will get seed funding
  • New acute hospital is only project funded so far in the north east or Yorkshire

The trusts which will benefit from a share of £2.7bn to rebuild hospitals, or £100m to develop business cases for future schemes, announced by the prime minister today.

Six hospital trusts will share £2.7bn to build new hospitals over the next five years, with two in London, two in the East of England, one in the Midlands and one in Yorkshire.

All are for acute hospital sites, including the Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust in Essex, Barts Health Trust’s Whipps Cross Hospital, and West Hertfordshire Hospitals Trust’s Watford General.

There will be £200m to fund new diagnostic equipment and a further £100m to provide seed funding shared between 21 hospital trusts to develop their business cases and building plans, to deliver projects by 2030.

Boris Johnson announced the funding today as the Conservative party conference in Manchester began. Matt Hancock, health and social care secretary, is due to speak on Monday at the conference.

Seven trusts in the South West have been marked up for the seed capital, to support plans for six acute projects and up to 12 new community hospitals.

Two trusts in London, The Hillingdon Hospitals Foundation Trust and Imperial College Healthcare Trust, will get money to support plans for four building projects. Imperial – the trust with the highest backlog maintenance bill in England – will receive support funding for three schemes, at Charing Cross, St Mary’s and Hammersmith Hospitals.

No schemes in the North East will receive any seed funding in the second round of funding but the Department of Health and Social Care has promised a third round of funding, from 2030 to 2035, will be awarded following an open competition.
