What’s changed in the ‘new hospitals’ programme?

Most notably, eight of the 22 larger hospital rebuild projects – including for Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust and Imperial College Healthcare Trust – have been delayed beyond their original 2030 due date, as promised in the Conservative manifesto. 

On the other hand, seven hospitals with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete planks are now being prioritised. Of these, five – Airedale General, Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn, North West Anglia FT’s Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Mid Cheshire Hospitals FT’s Leighton Hospital, and Frimley Park – are new to the programme.

Meanwhile, three mental health building programmes which were already under way outside of the NHP have now been included in it, seemingly to help make its numbers back up to 40 developments by 2030.

The government has said NHP will now be a “rolling” programme ongoing beyond 2030, and that work on the delayed schemes would continue, which several of them have welcomed.
