WORKFORCE: London’s largest foundation trust has criticised NHS London’s policy on nurse workforce planning.
The chief nurse of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust, Eileen Sills, warned the board of the south London organisation in January that a reduction in adult nurse training commissions were “likely to result in workforce planning difficulties in the future.”
The minutes report Ms Sills said: “Commissions for some [Higher Education] institutions would be reduced by up to 50 per cent, which would make it difficult for them to increase their capacity rapidly.
“One of the universities affected was London South Bank University; and this was a particular concern to the trust as its trainees generally reflected the mix of the local population and was an important [part] of diversity in our workforce.”
The board agreed to write to the chair and chief executive of NHS London “to express concerns about the scale of the reductions and the implications for this and other trusts in an area that should be provider driven, with direct reference on the impact on the London South Bank University.”
