PERFORMANCE: The FT is making efforts to improve areas of poor performance in trauma and orthopaedics.

At its February board meeting, members reviewed a clinical governance committee report, which highlighted several issues.

Board papers note that trust director of nursing Mary Dunne “drew the board’s attention” to trauma and orthopaedics, theatres and patient safety.

Regarding trauma and orthopaedics, the papers said: “The presentation had highlighted areas of below expected performance, which included: poor compliance with some aspects of the antibiotic policy, poor compliance with the Saving Lives Audit (a delivery programme to reduce healthcare associated infections) and falls which continued to account for the highest number of reported incidents.”

They add: “The directorate had taken these issues on board and good progress was being made to improve performance. The directorate would update the committee in May 2011 on the actions taken to improve performance.”
