PERFORMANCE: Capacity issues at Heatherwood and Wexham Park NHS Foundation Trust caused a “serious incident” as the trust’s accident and emergency department became unsafe while ambulances queued outside.
NHS Berkshire cluster board papers say that the incident took place on 2 September.
“Heatherwood and Wexham Park NHS Foundation Trust experienced severe capacity issues, resulting in nine ambulances queuing to offload patients,” the papers say.
“There were no beds in the organisation, resulting in 18 patients waiting for a bed in the Accident and Emergency department. This caused the A and E department to become unsafe,” the papers added.
