COMMERCIAL: Gateshead Health Foundation Trust has become one of the first UK trusts to sell its carbon trading credits after it reduced energy usage.

The sale under the European Union emissions trading scheme has generated £140,000 income for the trust, which has met the national target of reducing emissions by 10 per cent three years early.

Peter Harding, Director of Estates and Facilities at QE Gateshead said: “We are one of very few trusts in the country that have achieved the target, making these savings even more significant. A lot of the credit must go to our engineering team who identified areas where energy could be saved and worked hard to bring those to fruition.”

“Becoming more green will have a positive knock on effect for patients, in that the money we are saving through our green scheme will be invested back into patient care in Gateshead.”
