WORKFORCE: Great Ormond Street Hospital Foundation Trust has appointed a new chief executive with a background in children’s healthcare management in Australia.

Dr Peter Steer has been the chief executive of Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service for the past five years. He will join Great Ormond Street in January next year.

He is also a professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland, and is a board member of the Australian Provincial Council on Children’s Health.

Julian Nettel has been standing in as interim chief executive and will lead the trust until Dr Steer takes over.

The chair of Great Ormond Street Hospital, Baroness Blackstone, said: “I am delighted that Peter has agreed to join us. He has an impressive track record of successfully leading a specialist paediatric hospital group for some years. He will provide a powerful combination of management, clinical and academic experience as the chief executive here.”

Dr Steer said: “It’s a privilege to be joining Great Ormond Street Hospital. I am very excited to have the opportunity to be part of an organisation with such credibility and that has done so much to change the outcomes for some of the sickest children in the UK, indeed in the world.

“I am hoping that the combination of my academic, clinical and leadership experience will bring real value to the organisation.”
