SERVICE DESIGN: Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded £400,000 to upgrade it maternity unit - The Princess Anne Wing -based at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

The money will go towards a major refurbishment of the unit to improve the birthing environment for mothers and their partners. Upgrades will include the refurbishment of 10 delivery suites including one with a birthing pool and a new, more natural lighting systems.

Teresa Harding general manager for the Women’s & Children’s directorate, said: “As well as generally revamping the unit, so it provides a more modern and comfortable birthing experience for mothers, the improvements will also provide a more pleasant working environment for staff.”

The trust applied for the funding last November and is one of over 100 hospitals across the country to win a share of the £25 million Department of Health fund.
