FINANCE: All four primary care trusts in the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth cluster achieved their surplus targets for the first quarter of 2011-12.
However Southampton and Hampshire PCTs were only able to do so by applying around a quarter of their contingency budgets, worth £5.1m and £3m respectively.
The SHIP cluster’s finance and performance report for July said the two PCTs had been forced to release extra cash to offset overperformance on acute contracts.
The four PCTs reported a collective surplus of £1.57m, slightly better than the planned position of £1.52m, after Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight beat their target surplus levels.
The cluster expects to achieve its £6.06m target surplus for the year.
