More than half the English population is covered by pathfinder commissioning consortia after the Department of Health announced a further 89.

The DH said practices providing healthcare to 28.6 million people were now members of pathfinders.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley said the news was “evidence of widespread enthusiasm for taking these ideas forward”.

He said: “If we want better results for patients and a more efficient NHS, then we must devolve power to general practices.

“It is clear that GPs and nurses are ready and willing to take on commissioning responsibilities, the pathfinders to date demonstrate this but most importantly, the changes will enable them to make the decisions that better meet the needs of their local communities and improve outcomes for their patients.”

The first 52 pathfinders were revealed on HSJ.co.uk last month.

Prime minister David Cameron today gave a speech in support of Mr Lansley’s reforms, ahead of the publication of the health and social care bill on Wednesday.
