Our winners devised an IT solution which enables clinicians to access their desktop securely from anywhere and on any mobile device

Information Technology: Non-Clinical Support Services

Winner: Birmingham CrossCity CCG

Birmingham CrossCity’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is an IT solution which enables clinicians to access their desktop securely from anywhere and on any mobile device.

It is anticipated that once completed the entire solution will not only remove the financial deficit, but provide recurrent yearly revenue savings of £300k

Prior to its introduction, the existing localised digital infrastructure was costly to run, requiring the CCG to invest around £250k of recurrent additional funds each year. It is anticipated that once completed the entire solution will not only remove the financial deficit, but provide recurrent yearly revenue savings of £300k.

The VDI solution forms the foundation of a joint IT strategy between Birmingham CrossCity CCG and Midlands and Lancashire Commissioning Support Unit, designed to improve patient care and system efficiencies.

The ultimate aim is to enable any clinician and any patient in Birmingham to communicate either face-to-face, by telephone, video or e-communication. This will remove the need for clinicians to be tied to their practice to treat patients.

Judges’ comment: Compatible with new models of care. Huge piece, ambitious. Change management programme – not just technical.

Highly commended: Southern Health Foundation Trust
