About 70,000 to 75,000 hip fractures occur each year in the UK, and the annual cost (including medical and social care) for all UK hip fracture cases is about £2 billion.
About 10 per cent of people with a who break their hip die within one month and about one third within 12 months. Most of the deaths are due to associated conditions and not to the fracture itself.
Average length of stay for hip fracture patients fell from 19.3 days in 2014-15 to 15.2 days to 2015-16
The Royal Berkshire Hospital Foundation Trust’s hip fracture unit was opened in February 2015 to enhance the care of patients admitted with fractured neck of femur. Average length of stay for hip fracture patients fell from 19.3 days in 2014-15 to 15.2 days to 2015-16.
