Chief executive, University College London Hospitals Foundation Trust ▼10
Sir Robert has been the most powerful NHS chief executive for at least half a decade. Like the other great managerial figure of his generation Sir Ian Carruthers (71), he has chosen to wield his influence - mostly - from outside the national set-up.
However, Sir Robert’s strongest wish now is to help deliver the all-foundation trust future to which the government has committed itself. Ian Dalton (12) chose Mike Deegan (59) to advise him on the transition, but is likely to seek Sir Robert’s view before making important decisions.
